Amsterdam at glance:  Amsterdam is the capital city of Netherlands. It is a Metropolitan city, with 219.4 square km. where the city proper has 4,457 inhabitants per square km. and 2,275 houses per square km. while 12% of the land is allocated for parks and nature reserves. With a population of 2, 158, 592, it is considered a highly urbanized city. Its cool oceanic climate is significantly influenced by its proximity to the Northwest Sea with prevailing winds and gales. Temperatures during winter are cool to mild. Night temperature rarely fall below -5 °C (23 °F) because  it is surrounded on three sides by large bodies of water and it enjoy a significant heat-island effects. The average daily high is 21.8 °C (71.2 °F) during the months of August. Amsterdam has an annual precipitation average of 833 millimeters (32.8 in) which is mainly protracted drizzles or light rain thus cooler temperature is prevailing through the months of October and March. Amsterdam is also the homes of Anne Frank, a literary icon and Von Gogh, an art icon. The famous Keukenhof gardens in west of Amsterdam is always filled with millions of Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and other bulbs flowering. The canals and the waterways of Amsterdam is one main attraction that gained millions of tourists’ visits every year ‘round.

Currency: Most used currency is The Euro. Dominations of 5, 10, 20, and 50, 100,200 and 500 Euro notes are widely accepted in Amsterdam and in all the rest of Netherlands. However many shops here do not accept 100 and 200 Euro bill for any valid reasons and 50 Euro bill is the most convenient and widely accepted denomination.

Transportation: In Metropolitan Amsterdam, car driving is discouraged. Parking space is not available and parking fees are expensive, and many streets are closed to cars and are only one way. Government encourages and gives incentives to car polling and car sharing such as government sponsored Autodelen and Meeerijden. Public transport is by Night bus and Tram lines. Government has Issue OV-chip cards (public transportation chip card) which include the personal OV-chip card with photo of the holder. However there are three free ferries to carry pedestrians and cyclist and water taxis, water bus, electric rental boats and canal cruises to transport people along Amsterdam’s waterways.

Food: Amsterdam has many cafes, from small to cozy ones. Bruine Kroeg (brown Café) has dimmed lights, candles and caters to old fashioned atmosphere while modern cafes has terraces usually packed with people during summer drinking beer and wine. Pannekoeken is a local pancake which any Dutch can not think to have a meal with out. Edam cheese is another pride of Amsterdam.

Nightlife: Nightlife in Amsterdam is vibrant and diverse. Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein are two of the famous nightspots. But the worlds famous are the red light area. This is where window’s prostitutes are found, in their red fringed windows parlors, ready to give what clients are looking and wanting for. Prostitution is legal in Amsterdam and any thing you get is pure honesty of what you expect from any red light district. Choose from the three RLD namely Walletjes area, (located between Centraal Station and Nieuwenmarkt) Singel (Between Raadhuistraat and Centraal Station) and de Pijp (behind the Rijksmuseum) and you’ll never forget the experience.

Shopping:  Shop around Amsterdam for antiques, books, diamonds and other things. Shops are open from 1-6 pm on Mondays and 9/10 am- 6 pm Tuesday to Friday. Most roads are closed to cars; there are shopping corridors which has their own specialties and charms. Some shops are open until 9pm but close earlier during Saturdays at 5pm. Some are open until 8 or 10 pm. Kalverstraat, Damrak, Leidsestraat and Noorderkerk offer different shops and stores where shoppers can have shopping galore.
